In December 2022, NIF scientists made history by achieving ignition, or net energy gain from a fusion experiment. NIF’s approach of inertial fusion involves driving a massive amount of energy into tiny fusion-fuel target. The target implodes, causing atoms within to fuse. The resulting heat and density replicate, for an instant, the conditions within a star. Why is this breakthrough big deal? In the generations-long race to ignition, implosion physics won. It's the only approach that's worked in practice, pushing us closer to the promise of limitless clean energy. The question now, is how do we implode a target more efficiently?

Leveraging
proven
technology

NIF uses lasers to drive energy. Pulsed power, another energy driving method, works by discharging a giant battery to send a pulse of energy – akin to a lightning bolt – into a fusion target, imploding it. The "Z Machine" is the world's most powerful pulsed power facility. When operated, there’s more energy flowing through Z than all power on Earth. Pulsed power drivers can push target implosion even further – especially when integrating elements of proven approaches. MagLIF is defined by integration: coils for magnetization, lasers for pre-heating, and pulsed power drivers for liner compression. Integration is how MagLIF transcends traditional inertial fusion.

works

Leveraging the best from NIF and Z's breakthroughs, MagLIF can leapfrog stubborn engineering challenges. Also, it’s the only viable approach to a hybrid fission-fusion plant, a concept born in the US. China is the first to build one. We should be building one, too. In practice, implosion fusion works. Nothing else has come close. To increase efficiency and reduce costs, we're engineering a next-generation MagLIF machine, powered by Impedance-Matched-Marx-Generators (IMMGs). Our innovation enables us to build the most cost-effective, compact, and efficient IMMGs, ever. TITAN will be the first.

Path to power plant

From shot frequency and debris management to steep costs and system complexity – big challenges remain. But we're undeterred.
